DC I/O 2022

Peter Russell is Dean of the Institute for Future Human Habitat Studies (iFHHs) at the Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School (Tsinghua SIGS) where he is Professor of Computation in Architecture. Born in Canada, Peter studied engineering & architecture, completing his Master’s degree of Architecture at Dalhousie University. He subsequently worked in Switzerland and Germany and is a registered architect in Europe. His expertise in computers in the planning & construction process led to posts in Berlin, Karlsruhe, and professorships at the RWTH Aachen University and at TU Delft. In his research, Peter focuses on building information modelling (BIM), ambient assisted living, interactive architecture & the extension of architectural pedagogy through blended-learning practices, and ultimately, learning-by-building. This has led to leadership positions as dean at RWTH Aachen, TU Delft and Tsinghua SIGS.

He served as vice-chairman of the German Architecture Dean's Council and has had various roles in the leadership of higher education in Europe. He chaired the German Council on accreditation in Architectural Education (ASAP) and was named to the Association for European Education in Architecture (AEEA/EAAE) Council. He is a founding member of both the working group for Architectural-Informatics (AK•AI) and the European Architectural Research Network(ARENA). Peter also serves on the Chinese Council of Resilient Cities based in Tianjin.

Peter enjoys using pen and paper to draw solutions, employing computation to better these and taking tools in hand to build things that last.
